Handmade Persian khatam marquetry from an Isfahan workshop
Lamassu is a workshop in Isfahan, Iran, producing khatam-kari, traditional Persian marquetry made from thousands of hand-cut rods of brass, bone and coloured wood. The workshop makes backgammon boards, chess boards, gift boxes, accessory boxes and decorative marquetry panels, with every rod cut, bundle tied and surface assembled by hand. Painted miniatures on finer pieces are created freehand by individual artists using fine brushes, with no stencilling or printing involved. Lamassu positions itself as a workshop rather than a factory, emphasising that no two pieces are ever quite identical. The collection spans pocket-sized items to display pieces, jewellery and pen boxes, mirrors, frames, and corporate gift boxes, alongside restoration of older khatam work.
