Upper-GI microbiome intelligence via a swallowable capsule
Corealis develops CORAL, a swallowable, battery-free capsule invented at NYU Abu Dhabi that samples the small intestine to provide upper-gut microbiome data. Unlike stool tests, which only reflect the distal colon, or endoscopy, which is invasive and clinic-bound, CORAL offers non-invasive, scalable access to the upper GI tract. The capsule uses an engineered porous lattice to trap bacteria as it passes through the small intestine, then exits naturally for collection and analysis via DNA/RNA sequencing. Corealis works with research and clinical partners, having completed a first-in-human Phase I study in the US and published findings in Device (2025), aiming to make upper-GI sampling scalable for population-level research and care.
